Misconception #1: Wait as long as possible before cleaning your carpet.
This is VERY wrong. Every step on the carpet grinds dirt into the carpet fibers. A dirty carpet doesn’t last as long, and vacuuming just isn’t enough. The longer you wait on the carpet cleaning, the more damage the carpet endures and the faster it wears out.

Misconception #2: The only reason to clean carpets is to get out the dirt.
Also VERY wrong; all the outside chemicals, germs, and bacteria settle in your carpet due to gravity. If you have allergies, asthma, or other breathing problems, the source could be the pollens or chemicals in your carpet. After a proper carpet cleaning, you may notice that breathing is easier. Tobacco smoke has over 4,000 hazardous chemical compounds and 43 of those chemicals cause cancer.

Misconceptions #3: One method of carpet cleaning is as good as another.
This is NOT true. There are two primary methods of carpet cleaning: dry cleaning or hot water extraction. Dry cleaning the carpet is not similar to dry cleaning your clothing. All carpet cleaning methods use some water one form or another. The three methods of carpet dry cleaning are:

  1. Dry foam method—shampoo is applied to the carpet, dries, and then is vacuumed. This method isn’t very effective, as a residue can be left in your carpet.
  2. Dry-chem method—a large cotton bonnet is set on your carpet. With a specialized machine, the bonnet spins form side-to-side, absorbing the dirt. Once that bonnet is saturated, another one is applied. It’s not very effective for deep down restorative cleaning.
  3. Dry-compound method—spreads an absorbent mixture all over the carpet. A machine brushes the mixture into the carpet, absorbing the dirt. The mixture is vacuumed once it dries, but since the carpet is not rinsed at all, this method is also not very effective.

The hot water extraction method consists of a hot water cleaning solution being pressured into the carpet, then immediately vacuumed out of the carpet. This method is also referred to as steam cleaning. Hot water does not damage your carpet. The most effective way of carpet cleaning is with a hot-water unit mounted in a truck. It’s the most powerful cleaning machine on the market and the only machine that thoroughly cleans your carpet.

Misconception #4: Having the right equipment is all a company needs to properly clean your carpet.
Also NOT true; although companies may own hot-water cleaners, the majority of employees may not know how to use them. It’s essential to choose a reliable carpet cleaning company, so skip the hassle and go with United Water Restoration Group.

Misconception #5: The company that offers the lowest price is the company you should hire.
This is NOT always the case. The prices offered may not cover the services you need. The advertised price may not be the final payment cost. Before selecting a company, know what you want done. For a light cleaning, you can choose from various small companies or rent a machine and do it yourself. For a thorough cleaning, go with a reputable company, like United Water Restoration Group.
