Common Sump Pump Issues

Common Sump Pump Issues

A sump pump can be a great tool that may assist in preventing flood damage in your basement. These devices are fairly well-known and are used by millions of home and business owners in the United States with basements.

Sump pump issues are fairly common as the machine ages, they may absorb less water, flow slower, or stop working altogether. United Water Restoration Group would like to discuss common sump pump issues and help you determine if it is time to replace or repair your current sump pump.

What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a submersible machine that is installed in a sump pit. Typically, they are placed at the lowest point of a home or business. They are used to remove collected water from a water-collecting sump basin.

These devices are typically found in basements to help prevent a basement from flooding. These devices can be found at many different retailers and their pricing greatly depends on the size of the building they are going into and the strength required.

When Should a Sump Pump Be Replaced?

On average, a sump pump has a life expectancy of around 10 years.

The common mark to have problems starts around 7 years depending on the device purchased and the frequency of maintenance. Sump pump issues can happen at any time. Though, the older they get, the more likely they are to become worn and potentially broken.

Making Strange Noises

If your sump pump issues revolve around strange noises emanating from your sump pump, this could be a sign of worn or damaged parts.

The more excessive and loud the sump pump is, the more likely it has damaged mechanical parts. Your sump pump may repairable, but if it is over 10 years old, you may want to consider a replacement device.

Vibrates Rapidly When On

Another common sump pump issue is excessive vibration. If your sump pump has been put to work, it could face damage to the impellers on the device.

Sump pumps typically vibrate excessively when these components are bent or damaged. Sump pump impellers are designed to put as little stress as possible on the shaft that they spin on.

A damaged impeller can cause an imbalance and continued use can cause the device to be damaged beyond repair. Typically, the impellers on a sump pump are next to impossible to bend back into shape, meaning you more than likely will need to replace the device altogether.

Age of Device

As we’ve stated, most sump pump issues happen with age. These devices are not meant to last forever and their components typically only give them a shelf life of 10 years or so. Regular maintenance can assist in increasing the longevity of the devices. However, eventually, the device will need to be replaced regardless of the amount of maintenance or repairs.
